Getting noticed is easy. Remaining noticed is harder. Getting others to notice what you notice is the biggest challenge of all and that is playing a good Fame Game.
In today’s media landscape, the combination of increasing citizen engagement coupled with heightened interest in “real” people makes getting your fifteen minutes all the easier. Audition for a reality TV show, work the camera at a party, or hell, grab a friend and a cup, make it viral, and you are there! But, those looking to persist in fame know that association with the right people, being seen at the right parties, and involvement in the most interesting projects keep you in the game. And those in the game must actively play it as media inundation leads to more players and greater competition.
But, what constitutes a game well-played? Being consistently on the radar is a start, but the best players reach beyond that and use their influence to draw media attention to something new be it a brand, a cause, a creative endeavor or even another person. Adding this new element to the sphere, in turn, increases their own media attention and their power of influence. The rules are simple really. You give, you get, and no action is entirely selfless.
It’s all a game. How are you going to play it?
