Fashion week has ended here in NYC and with Oscars and London Fashion Week right on it’s heels, I wonder how anyone in the media sleeps during February.  Although there is never any shortage of gossip during fashion week (runway tents are virtual celeb pressure cookers), the usual reports on frivolous cat fights over seating arrangements was overshadowed by the biggest celebrity of 2009 – The Depression. YAY.  But honestly, what can be said about the recession and fashion that isn’t self explanatory? Looks are cheaper. Styles are less over the top.  Some fashion houses have folded. Designers had to cut back costs associated with the show etc. I scoured the pages searching for something I didn’t already know. The only other topics the media seemed interested in was the cast of Gossip Girl showing up to just about every runway show.  Snore.  Tori Spelling got a little huffy at the Christian Syriano show for no apparent reason. Sigh.  Ashley Dupre gets a front row seat at Yigal Azrouël’s runway show. BINGO.

Behold the behind the scenes footage of Justin Tellian’s DREAM shoot! Justin’s contribution to the This World is Yours event has been monumental and we wanted to encapsulate that effort with a video that attempts to say as much - this is a short interpretation of the shoot. As part of the event on Tuesday night, this video continues the experiment of seeding single messages in the media across a variety of platforms, the message in this case being DREAM. Please watch if you need a break from the daily grind or a glimpse at utopia. Full credit list after the jump. (more…)

While most of our more seasoned Movers and Shakers reside in Manhattan, in the Fame Game of the boroughs, Brooklyn is giving it to Manhattan…hard. When it comes to Brooklyn, one thing is certain: it knows how to get a reaction. Neither the borough’s admirers (“art, hipsters, those rents!”) nor its detractors (“Bugaboo’s, hipsters, what’s a ‘Z train?’”) can shut up about it. Attaching “Brooklyn” to your product’s label, not only provides resounding coolness (live up to it!), but also increases your chances of being talked about, and within a certain context .

Two years ago, Bob Bland found herself in the former camp, inspired by the “dynamic creativity and community feel” of her home. The designer began to create graphics and apparel evocative of the borough: stylish, but accessible, with bonhomie to spare (“Kings County Drinking Society” T-shirts and the like). After years working at long-established companies such as Ralph Lauren and Banana Republic, Bland founded her own label, Brooklyn Royalty. While the previous jobs had exposed her to big-league fashion, Bland says she “could no longer tolerate the dichotomy of Americana-based companies relying on overseas production.” Now, despite the challenges- fiscal and otherwise- of relying on local production and materials, she hopes people consider how a homegrown approach benefits both the economy and the independent design scene.
